Neck Pain treated by The Bowen Technique

Neck pain

back to treatable conditions

We all know our neck is what keeps our head on our shoulders. But did you know that the neck (cervical spine) is made up of 7 vertebrae and approximately 20 pairs of muscles? Muscles in your neck aren't as large as some of the other muscles in the body, but they are capable of some pretty amazing things: try rotating your head, back and forth, and up and down to feel the power of the muscles in your neck.

So what causes neck pain?
Neck pain can be caused from a number of things. It can be caused from abnormalities in the soft tissues - the muscles, ligaments, and nerves. It can also be caused from abnormalities in bones and joints of the spine.

The most common causes of neck pain are soft tissue abnormalities generally due to injury, wear and tear or excessive use (eg. sitting at a computer for long periods). In some people, neck problems may be the source of pain in the upper back, shoulders or arms. It may even be caused from injuries or abnormalities in your pelvis or coccyx.

NOTE: If severe neck pain occurs, particularly following an injury (eg. motor vehicle accident, diving accident, fall) you must seek medical attention immediately. If you are concerned about pains in your neck please seek medical advice immediately.

Bowen Therapy and Neck Pain
Pains in and around the neck are probably the most common conditions many Bowen Therapists treat. The basic Bowen Procedures know as BRM's treat neck pain almost immediately. Bowen Therapy has had great success with neck pain both acute and long term.

Generally, most neck pain can be treated in less than three Bowen Therapy treatments each lasting approximately 45 minutes long. The treatment is both gentle and relaxing.

Postures that may help reduce neck pain:

  • Lie on your back with a soft pillow and a small towel roll under your neck. Bend your knees and support them by large pillows.
  • Lie on your side with a soft pillow and a small towel roll under your neck.
  • Add pillows to your chair so you can rest your head and support behind your back.
